SECURE, ENERGY EFFICIENT SOCIAL HOUSING WINDOWS

SECURE, ENERGY EFFICIENT SOCIAL HOUSING WINDOWS

4 Sep 2009

Sheerframe fabricator H Jarvis Ltd has completed a newbuild social housing contract for Registered Social Landlord (RSL) Coast & Country that delivers windows with the optimum security, energy performance and aesthetics balance.

The Prior's Wood development in Guisborough, North Yorkshire is a development of 25 new three bedroom homes which Coast & Country is offering locally through renting and shared ownership.

The new homes were built by Yuill Homes who awarded the window contract to H Jarvis in a continuation of their well established working relationship. Coast & Country reports remarkably strong demand for the properties which reflects their quality and value as well as the shortage of affordable homes in North Yorkshire.

Key to the window specification was the police-approved Secured by Design (SBD), but equally important was the need to achieve high energy performance. The development was designed to the Ecohomes 'very good' standard, the predecessor to the Code for Sustainable Homes, so it was vital that the windows made a significant contribution to overall energy efficiency.

H Jarvis was able to meet these requirements with Secured by Design licensed Sheerframe PVC casement windows which perform to an A rating under the DWER (Domestic Windows Energy Rating) system. Like all Sheerframe windows, these also offer far-reaching long term sustainability benefits including being easy to recycle at the end of a long, low maintenance service life and totally free of lead additives.

Dave Glendinning, managing director of H Jarvis says, "In meeting the window specification at Prior's Wood we have demonstrated how it is possible to meet the dual requirements of security and energy performance without excessive cost or having to resort to windows that are unfamiliar to householders.

"The Sheerframe 6000 profile that we use is designed to achieve high window energy ratings and low U-values and meets the enhanced security requirements of BS7950 and Secured by Design. And, as Prior's Wood demonstrates, this is easily achievable without compromising aesthetics."

Sheerframe PVC windows have been widely used in social housing refurbishment and newbuild for three decades and the latest Sheerframe HED system is breaking new ground for those RSLs keen to achieve the highest sustainability standards. Windows created using Sheerframe HED offer U-values as low as 0.8 W/m2K, a thermal performance far lower than that routinely required for A ratings under the DWER system, making them suitable for low and zero carbon homes to Code levels 4, 5 and 6.
